The Office encourages students to learn about these scholarships as early as possible in their UCONN career. The process of applying is complicated and multifaceted, so the Office is set up to help students with the actual submission of the application.

Scholarships for Incoming Freshman
Incoming freshman are automatically considered for all scholarships administered by the University of Connecticut when they apply for admission. There are a variety of scholarships available; some based on academic achievement, leadership skills, geographic location, heritage and financial need. In most cases a separate application is not necessary. However, a separate application is required for the Nutmeg Scholarship and the Day of Pride Scholarship; these may be obtained through the student’s high school guidance office.

Alumni Association Scholarships
The Alumni Association offers a variety of scholarships including General Scholarships, Legacy Scholarships, Chapter Scholarships, and scholarships based on the students major. All current, University of Connecticut undergraduates (freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors) who will be a full-time students in the upcoming academic year (including students from all 6 UConn campuses) are eligible. In addition, the Association offers scholarships for seniors looking to pursue graduate studies at the University of Connecticut.

The Canon Envirothon

To expose students to diverse environmental issues, ecosystems, and topography, the Canon Envirothon is hosted by a different state or province each year. In addition to the actual competition, the event also includes social, cultural, and educational activities organized by the Canon Envirothon Host Committee. Conducted over five consecutive days every summer during July or August, the Canon Envirothon is a competition comprising five testing/training stations and an oral presentation component. At the testing stations and the oral presentation, each team's performance is evaluated and scored by individuals with field expertise. At the conclusion of the competition, scores are combined for final ranking and award/prize distribution.

The Hutton Jr. Fisheries Biology Program

The Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program is a summer mentoring program for high school students sponsored by the American Fisheries Society. The principal goal of the Hutton Program is to stimulate interest in careers in fisheries science and management among groups underrepresented in the fisheries professions, including minorities and women. Application to the program is open to all sophomore, junior, and senior high school students regardless of race, creed, or gender. Because the principal goal of the program is to increase diversity within the fisheries professions, preference will be given to qualified women and minority applicants. Students selected for the program are matched with a professional mentor in their area for a summer-long, hands-on experience in a marine or freshwater setting. A scholarship of $3,000 is awarded to each student accepted into the program.

American Honda Foundation Grants
The American Honda Foundation makes grants to K–12 schools, colleges, universities, trade schools, and others for programs that benefit youth and scientific education, and programs pertaining to academic or curriculum development that emphasize innovative educational methods and techniques. The foundation seeks programs that are scientific, creative, humanistic, innovative, and more. Grants are awarded on a quarterly basis.

American Geological Institute (AGI) Minority Geoscience Scholarship
Since 1972, the American Geological Institute has administered the Minority Participation Program. The broad goal for this program is to maintain and increase incrementally the number of underrepresented ethnic-minority students in the geosciences. Recipients of AGI Minority Geoscience Scholarships are provided with financial awards ranging from $500 to $3,000 and given the opportunity to interact with a mentor from the geoscience community within the AGI MPP Advisory Committee.

American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) Scholarships
The American Indian Science & Engineering Society promotes excellence, leadership and opportunities in education and professional development for American Indians and Alaska Natives. AISES (we) enrich the fields of science and engineering with Native traditions and strengthen communities with knowledge, resources and innovation. Each year they offer a variety of scholarships to American Indian and Alaskan Native undergraduate students studying science or engineering.

The American Institute of Biological Science (AIBS) Diversity Scholars Program
The AIBS Diversity Scholars Program recognizes and promotes the achievements of underrepresented minorities in the biological sciences. Students are competitively selected to be part of the AIBS Diversity Scholars program. The goals of the program are to: (1) Encourage and support the biology careers of underrepresented minorities and people with disabilities and (2) Increase the participation of students from these groups in AIBS programs and activities.
Diversity Scholars will:
- Receive support to present their scientific research at a meeting of their choice. Diversity Scholars will each receive $1000 to cover expenses to present their research at a meeting of one of the AIBS member societies.
- Participate in the AIBS Annual Meeting. Diversity Scholars will be honored at the AIBS Annual Meeting. Registration fees will be waived and travel expenses will be paid by AIBS. Students will be recognized at an annual lunch with AIBS Board members and other mentors.
- Become members of AIBS. Diversity Scholars receive a full one-year AIBS membership, which includes a subscription to BioScience. Diversity Scholars are encouraged to participate in AIBS programs and activities.

The Association for Women Geoscientists (AWG) Scholarships
The Association for Women Geoscientists exists to promote the professional development of its members, to provide geoscience outreach to girls, and to encourage women to become geoscientists. The Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) Olin Fellowships
ASF Fellowships are offered annually to individuals seeking to improve their knowledge or skills in advanced fields while looking for solutions to current problems in Atlantic salmon biology, management and conservation.
The Fellowships may be applied toward a wide range of endeavors including salmon management, graduate study, and research. Applicants need not be enrolled in a degree program.

A.T. Anderson Memorial Scholarship
AISES' own scholarship program was established in 1983 in memory of A.T. Anderson (Mohawk), a chemical engineer who founded AISES with six other American Indian scientists. Scholarships are awarded to members of AISES who are American Indian/Alaskan Native college students pursuing academic programs in the sciences, engineering, medicine, natural resources, and math.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.

Brower Youth Awards Program of the Earth Island Institute
The Brower Youth Awards program is a call for young environmental leaders to step forward and be recognized for their efforts. The cash prize is not a scholarship, but a reward for past work and present leadership. Recipients are generally encouraged to use the prize to assist in their own education or to further their environmental work. Six Award recipients are selected each year. The Award includes: a $3,000 cash prize; a trip to San Francisco, CA for the awards ceremony for the recipient and one chaperone; a three-day Wilderness Encounter; a framed award certificate; local and national media coverage; ongoing access to mentors, resources, and leadership development opportunities, including a full scholarship to the annual Bioneers Conference.

Bureau of Reclamation Scholarship and Internship
Established in 2001, in partnership with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. The scholarship is available to American Indian/Alaska Native undergraduate students seeking a Bachelors degree in engineering or science, relating to water resources or an environmentally-related field. Applicants who are not selected as recipients will be given consideration in the A.T. Anderson Memorial Scholarship program, if all criteria is met. This scholarship is jointly funded by the Bureau of Reclamation and the National Water Resources Institute.
This scholarship includes a mandatory paid 8- to 10-week internship at a Bureau of Reclamation site that must be completed prior to graduation.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Foundation Scholarship
Administered for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Foundation, this scholarship is made available to 5 new American Indian high school seniors every year, who reside in states serviced by the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Pacific Corporation and its affiliated companies: Arizona, California, Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, and Washington. The award is for 4 academic years (8 semesters) or until baccalaureate degree is obtained, whichever occurs first. Applicants who are not selected as recipients will be given consideration in the A.T. Anderson Memorial Scholarship program, if all criteria is met. Eligible majors include business, engineering, math, medicine/health administration, natural/physical sciences, technology and education.

DO SOMETHING BRICK AWARDS
The Do Something BRICK Awards honors 6 outstanding leaders age 18 and under and 3 outstanding leaders age 19-25 who develop projects to improve their community. Winners in "18 yrs. & under" category receive a $5,000 scholarship and a $5,000 grant; winners in the "19-25" category each receive a $10,000 grant. Online application only.

Entomological Society of America & Entomological Foundation Awards, Honors & Scholarships
The Entomological Society of America (ESA) is the largest organization in the world serving the professional and scientific needs of entomologists and people in related disciplines. Founded in 1889, ESA today has more than 5,700 members affiliated with educational institutions, health agencies, private industry, and government. Members are researchers, teachers, extension service personnel, administrators, marketing representatives, research technicians, consultants, students, and hobbyists.

Environmental Excellence Awards
The 2007 SeaWorld/Busch Gardens/Fujifilm Environmental Excellence Awards program is now soliciting applications. Since 1993, the awards have recognized the outstanding efforts of students, teachers, and community groups across the country who are working at the grassroots level to protect and preserve the environment. Project applicants should be able to demonstrate significant accomplishments that have occurred prior to the submission deadline.

Environmental Professionals' Organization of Connecticut (EPOC) Scholarship Fund
EPOC recognizes its duty to assist in the education of individuals planning a career in the environmental industry. Consequently, the EPOC Environmental Scholarship Fund was established in 1998 to assist Connecticut residents who are attending a college or university (CT colleges or out of state colleges) and have declared majors pertinent to the environmental field.
The scholarships are awarded annually to junior, senior, and graduate level students (full or part time) enrolled in accepted programs of study leading the student to become an Environmental Professional in the State of Connecticut.

Administered for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, this scholarship is provided to college juniors, seniors, and graduate students majoring in environmental science disciplines. Graduate Research Fellowship Program
The National Science Foundation aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 1,000 graduate fellowships in this competition. The Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based master’s or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are at the early stages of their graduate study. The National Association of Black Geologists and Geophysicists (NABGG) Scholarship

The National Association of Black Geologists and Geophysicists (NABGG) is honored to provide scholarships to undergraduate and graduate minority students enrolled full-time in geoscience programs at an accredited college or university. The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) Campus Ecology Fellowship Program
The National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology Fellowship Program offers a nationally recognized opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to pursue their vision of an ecologically sustainable future. Through tangible projects to green their campuses and communities, Fellows gain practical experience in the conservation field and first-hand knowledge of the challenges and opportunities inherent in successful conservation efforts.
In addition to joining the national network of current and alumni Campus Ecology Fellows, students also receive a modest grant, project support and recognition of their accomplishments. Campus and community stakeholders benefit from the Fellow's assistance with the research, design and implementation of projects that produce measurable results to help reduce consumption and pollution, restore habitat and support other environmentally sound initiatives.

The New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE) Shaw's/Coca-Cola Scholarship Grants for African-American Students
Twelve scholarships/grants in the amount of $1,250 will be available to African-American students who are:
The Scholarship was announced in recognition of Black History Month and will support twelve deserving African-American students in pursuing their educational goals. These merit- and need-based scholarship grants will be awarded to eligible college freshmen or sophomores or high school seniors who are planning to attend a New England college/university. Funds are to be used for college/educational expenses.

NSF Developing Global Scientists & Engineers Program
In response to a world in which science and engineering are increasingly global in scope, NSF’s Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE) has restructured its programs. One of the focal areas of OISE activity will be providing international research and education experiences for U.S. students and junior researchers. This solicitation addresses opportunities for international research and education for early career stages of scientists and engineers, i.e., as undergraduates and graduate students.

Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring
The PAESMEM Program seeks to identify outstanding mentoring efforts that enhance the participation of groups (i.e., women, minorities, and persons with disabilities) that are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The awardees serve as leaders in the national effort to develop fully the Nation's human resources in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) -- Earth Science Sites
The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects designed especially for the purpose. Undergraduate student participants in either Sites or Supplements must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. Students may not apply to NSF to participate in REU activities. Robert Noyce Scholarship Program
The Robert Noyce Scholarship program seeks to encourage talented science, technology, engineering, and mathematics majors and professionals to become K-12 mathematics and science teachers. The program provides funds to institutions of higher education to support scholarships, stipends, and programs for students who commit to teaching in high need K-12 schools.

The Sallie Mae Fund
Students can now apply for more than $2 million in scholarships from The Sallie Mae Fund, a charitable organization sponsored by Sallie Mae. Delivered through The Fund's Project Access program, these scholarships target low income and minority populations in an effort to increase access to higher education. Project Access addresses three key barriers to higher education-awareness of financial aid, academic performance and financial need.

The Samuel Huntington Public Service Award
The Samuel Huntington Public Service Award provides an annual stipend of $10,000 for a graduating college senior to pursue public service anywhere in the world. This allows recipients to engage in a meaningful public service activity for one year before proceeding on to graduate school or a career. Students are encouraged to develop their own proposal for public service in this country or abroad. The proposal may encompass any activity that furthers the public good. It can be undertaken by the student alone or by working through established charitable, religious, educational, governmental, or other public service organizations.

Undergraduate Mentoring in Environmental Biology (UMEB) Program
The Undergraduate Mentoring in Environmental Biology (UMEB) Program is designed to enable institutions to create programs that will encourage undergraduate students, especially those from under-represented groups, to pursue a career in environmental biology. The UMEB Program supports projects that provide year-round support for undergraduate students to gain research experience in environmental biology. Environmental biology is broadly defined to include areas of research focusing on organisms as they evolve, interact with each other, and/or interact with their environment, from perspectives that range from molecular to ecosystem levels. Environmental biology also includes molecular studies of environment-organism interactions and environmental genomics. Field experience must be part of the research experience. Projects should emphasize factors that encourage and enable members of under-represented groups to enter, and remain in, environmental biology. The UMEB Program now requires submission of a preliminary proposal.
