UConn Patagonia Research Project (Winter Intersession)

Since 1977, Dr. Morty Ortega has been studying different aspects of ecology at Torres del Paine National Park in the Chilean Patagonia. The research expeditions are fun and entertaining, with plenty of excersice (up to 10 miles a day!) and the potential to see beautiful vistas and incredible wildlife.

Students will work in a group doing ecological research for 15-20 days in a rough camp, without sanitary facilities or showers, but with the enthusiasm to carry research in a magnificient place.  Research projects in the past have included studies of mammals (including guanacos, fox, huemel, and smaller mammals), birds, aquatic fauna, and wetland ecology.

African Ecology and Renewable Resource Management (Summer Intersession)

This course was the dream for many years of Professor Peter Lent at the Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, University of Fort Hare. Similarly John Silander and Morty Ortega, both with extensive experience in running field courses in the US, were searching to develop a course overseas. This was the perfect opportunity.  Students participating in this course will be provided with an overview of the ecological systems in southern Africa, their management and related conservation issues, with emphasis on the ecosystems and landscapes of the region. UConn students receive background lectures and exposure to South African culture and society, and human rights issues. For three-weeks, in late May and early June, students are exposed to a variety of activities and research techniques used in ecology and natural resources management while at the Great Fish River Game Reserve in South Africa.
