Science and Technology: Reaching Out to New Generations in Connecticut
STRONG-CT is an academic support program for first generation students in the life sciences. Many of these students are African American and Latino/a, who may choose to go to community college as the primary way of accessing higher education. The STRONG-CT helps serve as a bridge between these community colleges and the University of Connecticut. Support within the Program
The Environmental Science Program at the University of Connecticut is fully committed to ensuring the academic and personal success of our students. As an interdisciplinary major spanning two colleges, the Environmental Science program offers its students access to a wide variety of staff, faculty, and resources to better their academic performance, support the development of a successful social life, and provide the students with access to internships and other career preparation opportunities.
Upon initial entry into the program, all Environmental Science students are contacted by the program Co-Director affiliated with the college through which the student enrolled (either the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences or the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources). In addition, these students will receive support and course advisement from the Program Assistant, who is available throughout the year. The Program Assistant will help guide these students through the process of declaring a focus area, or "concentration," within Environmental Science by their fourth semester. Once the student declares a concentration, they are assigned to an additional advisor, a faculty member of the department through which their selected concentration is offered.
The Resource Center & Club
Course advising and career preparation is only the beginning of the services that we offer to our students. The Environmental Science Resource Center provides students with a central place where they can study, meet other students, use the Internet, read books on career opportunities, or stop by to talk to the Program Assistant. The Resource Center is located in the center of campus, in Room 225 of Beach Hall.
In addition, students within the program are encouraged to participate in the various environmental clubs and professional organizations that the University has to offer. Throughout the year, students are also encouraged to work with the Program Assistant to organize community building activities such as outing trips and related events, organize speaker panels relating to environmental issues, and arrange for potential employers to meet with students interested in finding either an internship or post-graduation employment.
Beyond Academics
The Program Assistant, the advisors, and the Co-Directors also pay careful attention to the personal needs of our students. We recognize that students come to the University of Connecticut not only for an excellent academic experience, but to grow as individuals. Therefore, we work together to ensure that students are provided with the necessary tools and resources to achieve success in all aspects of life.
